Specialized Center of Research in Women and Gender Issues Medications in Pregnancy: Defining Exposure The central theme of this Specialized Center of Research in Women and Gender Factors is pharmacokinetic and pharmacodynamic (PK/PD) modeling of anti-epileptic drugs and psychotropic medications during pregnancy and lactation using both human and rodent paradigms: defining fetal/neonatal exposure and influence on obstetrical outcome. Project 1: Course and Predictors of Epilepsy in Pregnancy and Postpartum This project will study pharmacokinetic, pharmacodynamic, and pharmacogenetic (PK/PD/PG) modeling of anti-epileptic drugs during pregnancy and lactation in women with epilepsy. Role: Project 1 Principal Investigator P50 NS16308 NIH I Leppik (PI, U of Minnesota) 10/01/02-9/30/07 Epilepsy Clinical Research Program Grant at University of Minnesota The major goal of this program project is to increase knowledge of the pharmacokinetic, pharmacodynamic, and pharmacoepidemiology of AEDs in the elderly. The project also includes investigation of genetic and racial factors. Projects 1 and 3 will enroll patients from 3 varied clinical sites (MINCEP, University of Miami, and Emory University). Project 1: Effects of Age, Gender, and Race on the Metabolism of Antiepileptic Drugs Role: Co-Investigator, Emory site Principal Investigator Project 3. Population Pharmacokinetics of the Newer Antiepileptic Drugs in Elderly Epilepsy Patients Role: Co-Investigator, Emory site Principal Investigator RO1NS38455-02 NIH K Meador (PI, Georgetown University) 11/01/01-10/31/05 Neurodevelopmental Effects of Antiepileptic Drugs This multicenter study is a comparison of the neurodevelopmental outcome of children exposed in utero to carbamazepine, phenytoin, valproate, or lamotrigine. Role: Co-investigator, Emory site Principal Investigator RO1 NS 39466 NIH A. Herzog (PI, Beth Israel/Harvard) 9/01/02-8/31/03 Progesterone Therapy for Women with Epilepsy This is a four-center randomized, placebo-controlled trial evaluating the efficacy and safety of adjunctive progesterone therapy in women with medically refractory epilepsy. Role: Co-investigator, Emory site Principal Investigator Active Support, Private Funding: Sponsor: GlaxoSmithKline PB Pennell (PI) 8/03-8/05 The Excretion of Lamotrigine into Human Breast Milk: Determining Nursing Infant Daily Dose This is a three-center study of the pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics of lamotrigine in breast feeding mother-child pairs, and in newborns exposed to lamotrigine in utero (neonatal clearance). Role: Study Principal Investigator Sponsor: Pfizer PB Pennell (PI) 9/01/98-09/01/03 Cyclic Reproductive Hormones and AED Levels in Women with Catamenial Epilepsy This is an observational study of the relationships between seizure frequency and sex steroid hormone levels and antiepileptic drug levels in women with catamenial epilepsy. Role: Principal Investigator Sponsor: UCB Pharma PB Pennell (PI) 9/01/02-9/01/03 A Pilot Trial of the Use of Levetiracetam in the Treatment of Catamenial Epilepsy This is an investigator-initiated, single-center, pilot trial evaluating the safety, efficacy, and tolerability of adjunctive cyclic levetiracetam in the treatment of women with medically refractory partial epilepsy with a catamenial pattern. Role: Principal Investigator Sponsor: GlaxoSmithKline A Herzog (Project PI, Beth Israel/Harvard) 8/01/02-8/01/03 Reproductive Endocrine Function in Men with Epilepsy This is a three-center study examining reproductive hormone levels in men with partial epilepsy in relation to specific antiepileptic drugs.
