Flexible Training Path Curriculum

FLEXIBLE TRAINING PATH

We offer a Flexible Neurology Training Path which allows residents more time to focus on clinical or basic science research during all three years of residency. On the flexible path, residents will be given extra time for research during each PGY year. Residents will still fulfill all ACGME requirements for graduation.

Residents must apply for the flexible path by November 1st of their PGY-2 year; interested residents are encouraged to seek out research mentors during their PGY-1 year, though it is still possible to apply if a mentor is not identified until the PGY-2 year. A committee of physician scientists and core residency faculty will review all applications; decisions will be granted by January 1st. There is no limit on the number of residents who can be on the flexible path at any given time. Prior research experience is recommended, but not an absolute requirement.

During the PGY-3 year, residents on the flexible path are encouraged to apply for an NIH R25 grant, which secures funding for six months of protected mentored research time during the PGY-4 year and during one year of fellowship training. R25 grant applications are due in the fall of the PGY-3 year. Participants in the program will have the added benefit of a mentoring team comprised of 1-2 senior scientists in addition to the primary mentor who will help the resident through the grant-writing process.

Flexible Path Curriculum

Residents on the flexible path will satisfy all ACGME requirements for graduation. They will do the same number of inpatient rotations as their traditional curriculum classmates, and the same number of on-call nights/weekends. Residents can still choose to do clinical electives during the PGY-2 and PGY-3 year if they wish.

PGY-2 During the PGY-2 year, residents on the flexible path have an additional 6 weeks of research time, for a total of 12 weeks. Rotations in sleep (2 weeks) and general neurology (2 weeks) are forfeited, and only 2 weeks are spent on EMU/epilepsy instead of four. While on research rotations, PGY-2 residents do an average of one 24-hour call and one 12-hour call per 4-week block.

PGY-3 During the PGY-3 year, residents on the flexible path have an additional 6 weeks of research time, for a total of 14 weeks. To accomplish this, the neuromuscular rotation is reduced by 4 weeks, the EMU/epilepsy rotation is reduced by 2 weeks, and the neuro-ophthalmology rotation is reduced by 2 weeks. The neuropathology rotation is shifted from the PGY-4 year to the PGY-3 year and reduced from 4 weeks to 2 weeks. While on research rotations, PGY-3 residents do an average of one 24-hour call per 4-week block.

PGY-4 During the PGY-4 year, residents on the flexible path have an additional 4 weeks of research time, for a total of 24 weeks. To accomplish this, the neuropathology rotation (4 weeks) is reduced by 2 weeks and shifted to the PGY-3 year. While on research rotations, PGY-4 residents do an average of one 12-hour call per 4-week block.
